Indy.com story on local food producers.

Hi, I work for Indy.com and I'm writing a story about local food producers and the move to return to the land without leaving the city, so to speak. My inspiration is the transformation Havana underwent during the peak oil crisis. I really feel that within a generation or two America will want to/be forced to return to a subsistence gardening model in major cities to supplement agribusiness. As I like to buy and eat local I already have some leads but feel free to share ideas about where I should go and who I should talk to.

Do you find this valuable?

My family is striving to eat local by purchasing through Apple Family Farms and Farm Fresh Delivery. Both owners/workers of these businesses are wonderful to talk to and of course provide some of the best quality products arround. You would be amazed at the difference between store bought CAFO beef and the pasture raised and dry aged beef from the Apple's....it actually tases like steak! The product from Farm fresh is similar. I hope this helps, if you need more details about contacts let me know. You might also look into cloth diapering as antoher grass-roots effort. Today's cloth diapers are easier to use than disposable in many cases since they now have velcro, snaps, inserts, etc. Do you find this valuable?

We have many farms listed under Organic Farming on this website. Also, I would suggest talking to Angie Herrman of Indy Sustainable Food Alliance (http://www.indysustainablefoodalliance.org/). She did a research paper on local community gardens and is also very knowledgeable about food security. Also, Victoria Wesseler, who does the going local blog (http://www.goinglocal-info.com/). And Kay Grimm, who operates Basic Roots CSA (http://www.localharvest.org/member/M19945) and has connections to many local farmers. Do you find this valuable?
