Is Bigger Better?
Mar 28 2008, 9:01 AM EDT
In her book "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" (p. 76), Barbara Kingsolver's husband Steven Hopp says that small farms are not only more environmentally responsible but also maximize profits. He claims that the reason they cannot stay in business is due to marketing. Supermarkets prefer to buy truckloads of vegetables from one operation rather than several smaller ones. How do we get the food from these smaller farmers to the customers that want to buy them? Let's hear your ideas. To learn more, check out the following links: National Family Farm Coalition 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

The book has been very inspirational to me. I help spread the word though my web sites, www.HendricksCountyConnection.com and www.ChangeForGoodWellnessCoach.com . I'm also starting a workbook class called Menu for the Future put on by the NorthWest Earth Institute. It will start this Sunday April 20th at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Danville at 7:00pm behind Mayberry Cafe. I attend the local farmers markets and talk to everyone I know about eating locally and the difference it makes! I also have started conversation about getting a CSA out on the West side and understand Seldom Seen Farms is starting a delivery point in Plainfield. I taped Human Footprint from National Geographic and my kids are watching it, a great demonstration of our consumption to be aware of. More and more web sites are being created to spread the word. It's an exciting time where awareness is growing!
