One of our "pledgees," Susan Heitzman of North Vernon, writes,

"My husband and I have eaten 50% local down here in Jennings County for at least a year, although we have acquired blueberries, asparagus and peaches from Northern Indiana and Michigan while visiting family. My latest local discovery from our Farmer's Mkt. is gooseberries which I made into a delicious jam--no seeds! Note: Gooseberries are a little labor intense even without seeds--you have to take off both the tiny stem and the flower end. 4 cups of berries, one cup of water, boil until skins are tender and then add 3 cups of sugar--doesn't need anything else and cooks up very quickly--found recipe in 1930s cookbook of my mother's. Citrusy taste, but will use sparefully with so much sugar involved."

Hi, all. Yesterday, some residents of Richmond, Indiana assembled to see how well they could meet a particular "eat local" challenge: could they produce a meal for each other where all of the ingredients came from within 100 miles of their home? We called it the 100-Mile Radius Potluck, and you can see a video about the results here:

Enjoy!

I've heard from some people that the first week was difficult. Farmers markets do not have an abundance of produce yet, although that will change in the next few weeks. Are you overwhelmed? On the verge of giving up? Tell us what you need help with. Also tell us your successes. Maybe you've found some things easier than expected.
