This one room pioneer building was built around 1860 replacing log church built around 1840 for congregation which had met in Judge Prather's home on nearby Otter Creek from 1816. Church has lights and furnaces in ceiling, all original furnishings, has a labyrinth for reflection in adjacent cemetery. Has always had compost toilet. Turns breakers off between services since installation of new thermostat. Meets quarterly, third Sundays March, June, September, December, usually close to Spring and Fall Equinoxes and Winter and Summer Solstices. Circuit Riders served this congregation and it is still added to a two point charge in South Indiana Conference, Columbus District, Rush Branch Charge, near location of Friendly Persuasion movie setting. Large multitrunk hackberry has presided over entrance for many generations. 7 generations of same family buried in cemetery. This is sustainable Indiana. Contact Susan Heitzman heitzman@seidata.com

Walnut Grove "Spring" Water

This company is not sustainable and not community oriented. If it was it would at least offer the community it has invaded and taken from some of its own water in a sustainable way- through pipes and not the eco-unfriendly bottle. It would not price its neighbors out of buying its product. This company takes millions of gallons of water out from underneath other people's property and sells it for private personal profit. It uses huge, noisy, carbon-dioxide spewing trucks to sell this water at pennies a gallon to Kroger, but asked community members $4 for a 750ml bottle and requires a 10 case minimum. This company has taken a quiet, little farm-based community and turned it into an industrial trucking center with no regard for its neighbors. It has a "security" light on the back of it's building which, instead of shining down at the parking lot, shines out and blinds anyone who looks in its direction. This company does not harvest water from the small spring that used to exist and feed the surrounding countryside. It has drilled down and made it unnatural and now pumps the water out. In all honesty it should be called Walnut Grove Drilled and Pumped Water. Don't believe D. Wayne Smith's clever P.R. It is green-washing. This company is not community-friendly. It has several untruths on its website. This is a company who takes our community's precious water resource without compensation and ruins our quality of life. Please consider taking this off your "sustainbable" list.

Just a clarification: "chairlady111" is a member of this site, as is "ProgressiveGreene", not the moderator of the site. "SustIndy" is the moderator, and we actually took Walnut Grove Spring Water off our list after "ProgressiveGreene"'s original comments last November, mainly because we felt that we should not be promoting bottled water as being a sustainable practice.
This site was developed to recognize and promote organizations that are trying to incorporate sustainable practices into their operations. We welcome constructive discussion as to what constitutes sustainable practices on this site.

look to where delivery services are sourcing their offerings. I personally would rather buy sustainably grown food from LOCAL farmers than an certified organic item from out of state. To build food security in Indiana, we MUST support our own farmers (not corporate factory farms who can afford to be "certified").

I agree, it is better to support the little guy locally, even when they don't come with the "organic" tag. For example, the local apples I buy are not organic, but I find them to be much crisper and tastier than the long-distance organic ones. The very fact that they don't have to travel miles makes them more nutritious, and the carbon footprint is less, and I feel good supporting my local orchard. A win/win/win!

You can listen to a quick NPR interview here. Imagine how many people good eat good, whole food if American farm land was turned back over to fruit and vegetable production instead of paying farmers to grow commodities no one needs and destroying the excess.
